New Blog: Jorge Heine on The Global South, Gaza and the rise of Active Non-Alignment

In the second blog post of our new series, Jorge Heine dissects the repercussions of Israel’s actions in Gaza, highlighting the growing isolation of Israel and the United States on the global stage and the deepening rift between the West and the Global South. Highlighting the rise of the Global South, Heine further explores the geopolitical transformations driven by the emergence of Asian, African, and Latin American states. He introduces the concept of Active Non-Alignment (ANA) as a new strategic foreign policy approach, emphasising autonomy, adaptability, and a pro-active stance in navigating a changing global order. Heine argues for ANA’s relevance in a world where traditional alliances are shifting and emerging economies seek autonomy in their foreign policies.

Jorge Heine is a research professor at the Pardee School of Global Studies and interim director of the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University. The paperback edition of his book, co-edited with Carlos Fortin and Carlos Ominami, Latin American Foreign Policies in the New World Order: The Active Non-Alignment Option, was published by Anthem Press in January 2024.
