Professor Andrew Thompson

Professor Andrew Thompson is a historian of empire, a Fellow at Nuffield College, and Co-Director of the Oxford Centre for Global History.

He has written widely on histories of humanitarianism, human rights and international development and possesses extensive experience in translating research into policy. Thompson’s focus within the project involves an examination of how international institutions and international law have responded to and been influenced by various geopolitical forces in twentieth century history. Specifically, he examines how different types of international organisation have been and currently are influenced by global shocks and the upheavals of turbulent times. This complements his previous work for the AHRC funded programme on the ‘Past, Present and Future of International NGOs.’

Thompson is also working on a book for Oxford University Press, entitled ‘Humanitarianism on Trial: How a Global System of Aid, Development and Human Rights emerged from the End of Empire,’ and he sits as a Commissioner on the Global Commission on Modern Slavery, chaired by former Prime Minister, Theresa May.
